How Long Do Rats Live? - Really Cool

I recently got this book about rats - the book is called Rats by, Debbi Ducommun - and it had a scale of equivalent aging schedule for rats compared to humans. On the scale it had this information:
Rat Age Human Age
5 weeks ................................ 10 years
6 months ................................ 16 years
9 months ................................ 25 years
1 year ................................. 35 years
1 1/2 years ............................. 50 years
2 years ................................ 65 years
3 years ................................ 85 years
4 years ................................ 100 years
5 years ................................ 110 years
6 years ................................ 120 years
7 years ................................ 130 years

I thought this chart was very cool to see and I thought you might want to see it.
Please leave a comment and tell me what you think. No Email address required.

This chart is interesting. I thought rats do not live more than 3 years. Have you heard of any rats living 7 years (130 human years)?

our rat is 5 years old and is starting to age very quickly. i was surprised that most rats don't live past 3 years old

Wow, you must look after your rat very well for it to live so long! The average is 2-3 years, rarely older than that.

I just lost my 6 year old female last week. I had had her since she was 6 weeks old and new her birthday so I can in fact confirm her age. She had had 3 cage mates pass away each of which lived from 2 - 2 1/2 years each.

We just lost our rat today and he was 1 1/2 years old. We bought him from a pet store as an adult, and have no way of confirming his age. They are truly the greatest pets.

Anonynous you are an ignorant idiot!!!! They happen to make wonderful pets! Just because you are a cold hearted asshole doesn't mean the rest of the world is! I hope no animal has the misfortune of having you as an owner! Jerk!

Rats really are the greatest pets. They are just the right size to hold and cuddle. They are the cleanest and smartest rodents. A lot of rats come in a pearly white color, and the coats of well-kept rats are really shiny and soft. Anybody who doesn't see that a rat is awesome is a weirdo.

Listen if that is your opinion why are YOU reading a fucking article about rats?!? Common now!! Listen rats are rats. People have different preferences, snakes, hedge hogs, pigs, guine pigs, mice, hamsters, birds, lizards I can go on all day! The point is if you want to argue that rats are supposed to be outside carting diseases well, we all could argue that every fucking animal is supposed to be outside carrying diseases! Including us, and YOU!!

Our two boys died today, from what we think was a heart attack. They were 29 months and 30 months old, they loved there baths and loved to play with our dog. I never thought I could get go attached to two rats.
My 9 year old son is devastated, his dad suggest we buy new ones, but I don't want to go thru the loss of another rat, its broken my heart.
What should I do?
I know that no other rat will ever be like Bear and Myles.

I got my rat back in the end of 2010 and he just recently passed away. He was approximately 3 years old. I bought him at a pet store & they said he was medium sized, so not a baby but not yet full grown. so sad.

I have just got a rat for the first time. She's 9 weeks old and very pretty, brown with a white arrow shaped marking on her belly. We've named her Damsel and couldn't be happier with her. The age chart is interesting, the more you handle your rat and keeping them in pairs or groups makes them happier and will also help them live longer apparently.

My son wanted a rat when he was 5 y/o and I couldn't do it. Some 7 years later he still wanted this rat. I though about it for 1 1/2 weeks and decided I would let him get one. I fell head over heels in love with this little guy and we had him for only 2 years. We were so broken hearted over his death and to this day keep his picture on our refrigerator. Greatest pet ever owned in my entire lifetime.
We are ready to buy one or two more in the next week and cannot wait! For anyone even thinking about it, it will be the greatest pet you ever own. I opt for males because they love to cuddle, would stand on hind legs to greet my son when he came home from school "the best animal ever."

My last rat lived for 5 years, even after having a hard start (very poor diet and care) but he was so sweet and rebounded well with a proper diet. I truly believe that as long as you give your ratties the good stuff for food, they'll live a good long time, but never long enough :(

Have had a few rats over the years, each and every one have had a very different personality, these little guys are just so awesome its impossible not to be heart broken when they leave.

One of my current ones(ted)had a stroke last week hes stll trying to do everything he always did just his body wont let him :( , don't expect a happy ending just a comfortable a passing as possible and more fond memories. Every time it happens I promise myself I won't have another but sooner or later ill see an unwanted chap somewhere and just cant help myself and have wonderful few years until the next time. Rats are AWESOME intelligent and the cleanest of animals .. worth the heartache to share a good few years with such an amazing animal. Be strong they will always add to your life and teach you things you never imagined.

my girl just had a nice litter of 6 babies they are 13 cads old and slowly opening there eyes there are so cute relly a great pet

If you don't think rats are necessarily the pet you are looking for, but want a pet similar to a rat, I would look into a chinchilla. This link is great for the history of chinchillas, and is really interesting.
