Please feel free to watch the You Tube videos about rats - except for the five random videos that keep coming up, they have nothing to do with rats. I don't know why, also please vote on the serveys and leave comments. Please come back every once in a while because I will be posting things very often, so stay in tune. Picking the Right Rat for You

Picking the right rat is also important. Rats have many different personalities. Some are more curious, while some are kind of lazy. You can get a rat from a pet store or you can get them from a rat breeder. I got 3 of mine from a pet store. But just recently I got 2 from a breeder. Breeders have more types of rats while pet stores may have 1 or 2 different kinds of rats. Girl rats have more energy and are usually more curios than boys. DO NOT GET A BOY AND A GIRL RAT, THEY WILL BREED, unless you want them to. I suggest that you do some research before breeding rats. One test that almost always works for finding the right rat is if you hold out your hand on the bottom of the cage. And the rat that goes on your hand is probably a good rat to think of buying. Pick a rat that you'll never get tired of. Do you want a curios one, a sweet one, or one that just sits there, but loves to be held. Before you buy the rat you like, make sure it is healthy, is it active, does it have all of its hair. If you follow these tips I'm sure you'll pick out the perfect rat. Wow thanks Rat Man. I was in the pet store the other day buying a dog toy for my sisters new dog and i saw one of those little guys up against the glass and i thought wow that would be cool to have a rat like that. ive been looking into it and i think it would be a great pet to have. right off the bat they are cheap to buy a pair and i recently had a hamster that died :( and i thought that that kind of cage would work.

i am thinking of getting a pet rat and your website is making me want one even more but i was told that rats like to live in pairs or groups is it a good idea to buy 2

It is a good idea to buy 2, or it won't be well socialised and will bite. And also, you shouldn't get rats from pet stores, they do not look after the rats properly. Breeders are good, and so is rescue, such as the SPCA.

I've had 4 rats (females) - 2 from a pet store that were brown, 2 from a breeder that were white. The brown ones were great - I LOVED them. The white ones I could NOT keep from stinking! 15 minutes after I cleaned the cage, it would smell. I tried EVERYTHIN! I'm getting 2 hooded dumbos this weekend - can't wait!

I got a hairless rat from the pet store. I love him, as does my four year old son, but I got him without a companion. I feel terrible now that I have read so many people say that rats need companions. Can I get him a companion now or will he fight with an unfamiliar male in his territory?

What if at a pet store they don't let you put your hand in the cage? I have had small pets who don't like me at all before and my younge rat I have now runs from me and I'm going to get him a companion as soon as his infection clears up. And is there anything I can do to make them sweeter, or like people and handling?

Im thinking of gettting a rat. I know I want one with smooth fur and definatly a tail. I want my son (3) to start learning respect for animals. I think a rat is the best animal because it's lower maintenance and rats are patient animals who love attention and don't bite. I had a hamster once. NEVER AGAIN. She ate me up (not from affection) I want a breed of rat that grows larger than most. Or at least a large breed. Am I being silly? Any advice?

If you don't think rats are necessarily the pet you are looking for, but want a pet similar to a rat, I would look into a chinchilla. This link is great for the history of chinchillas, and is really interesting.
