If you would like to read a little about me click on "Me and My Blog." Please feel free to watch the You Tube videos about rats - except for the five random videos that keep coming up, they have nothing to do with rats. I don't know why, also please vote on the serveys and leave comments. Please come back every once in a while because I will be posting things very often, so stay in tune. Different Breeds of Rats

There are many different breeds of rats, some might be more appealing to your eye. In this passage I'm going to show you some of the different kinds of rats.

The first kind of rat I'm going to show you is standard. The Standard variety of rat is what most people think of when they picture a rat. These rats have normal ears and tails (neither tailless nor dumbo), as well as short, even coats that lie flat and smooth.
Picture of a Standard rat.

Another common breed of rat is the Rex rat. Instead of a short, smooth coat, they have curls covering their bodies. There coats are thick and evenly curled all over. Even their whiskers are curled.

Picture of a Rex rat.

This next breed I have never seen, but I hope to some day. It is a Tailless breed of rat. Tailless rats are born completely without a tail. They often have a rounded rear, and a shorter, less racy body than their tailed counterparts.
Picture of Tailless rat.

Dwarf rats are a more common bred rat than the tailles rat. Dwarf rats are only 1/3 the size of a regular rat, so they are easier to take care of. I have a dwarf rat, but I'm not going to show her for this piticular breed of rat because she is also a dumbo rat. But if you would like to see pictures of her, see "My Rats". She is the black agouti rat. In this picture below it shows a standard rat compared to a dwarf rat. The dwarf rat is on the top of the photo.

Another breed of rat, that I'm sure you've all heard of, is a dumbo rat. (I have a dumbo rat) The only thing that makes a rat a dumbo rat is their ears. What's different about their ears is that they're on the side of their head and sometimes slightly bigger.

A common breed of rat that some might like is the hairless rat. Hairless rats are... hairless. And a little bit harder to take care of. This is because their skin is more sensitive than other rats, so you have to keep a close eye on their skin and how it's doing.

Hairless Rat

These are just some of the different breeds of rats. I will have other breeds of rats on this post or a different post soon, so check back in on my blog sometime soon

Hey Ratman.

I have a standard rat right now and I also want a dumbo rat. Is it a good idea to introduce a new rat to mine?
Oh, and have you heard of hairless rats? You should add them to your list of breed. They're cute.
Thanks for all the information. :)

I love rats, There my favorite animal! I have really wanted a pet rat but my parents say that I can't get one because we have to many pets already. at my moms house we have an OLD cat and a dog. at my dads house we have four dogs, a cat, two turtles, a lizard,a salt water fish tank, and a fresh water fish tank. I'm trying to wait until I'm an adult, but I can't; who could resist the cuteness of a rat? not me. I really want a pet rat! the last time I went into a pet store I saw a rat looking at me with its shiny, sparkling eyes, and I wish I could have brought it home as my new pet. To me Rats are magical animals, So if you can I would like to know how to convince my parents to get me a pet rat, PLEASE! -Sincerely, Rat girl, friend to all rats.

honestly, people shouldn't get rex, dumbo, tailless or hairless rats. none of that is natural and each form has their own problems.
rex: since their whiskers are curled those can grow into their skin which is very painful. they also can't "see" and orientate with such whiskers.
tailless: the rats can't climb well. they can't hold their balance without a tail either.
hairless: rats are animals that are very sensitive when it comes to cold and often catch colds which can end very badly.
dumbo: often have problems with hearing.
You shouldn't support those kinds of breeding. It's cruelty to animals!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

To the peta freak that posted January 29, 2010 4:42 PM. A lot of animals in which people keep as pets are "unnatural" Such as pretty much every "toy" breed dog, fancy goldfish, and cats ect. Cruelty to animals does not include loving an animal for it's flaws, and finding them perfect the way they are. Bonsai cat was cruelty. Preserving a special trait that happened naturally through breeding, not so much. That's like saying any person whom is "mentally challenged" or has any flaw whatsoever such as dwarfism or perhaps has conjoined twins in there dna should not be aloud to reproduce. Enjoy these beautiful silly creatures for what they are, not for what you think they should be.

hi i have a rat but i dont know what type it is its got kinda long hair and is grey and white and has a long tail

Rat Man said...

I agree with the anonymous who said it is not animal cruelty to breed rats with differences. In my opinion, being against breeding other than standard rats would be like saying "we shouldn't let curly haired people reproduce anymore, there's something wrong with them! Whoever loved a curly haired person, shame on you! There is clearly something wrong with them! How could you love them!" To me what you just said means the exact same as I compared. And coming from the point of view from a much more educated person in the field of rats, I can tell you that those disabilities do not effect or harm the rat in any way shape or form. If you take somewhat good care in any way shape or form of your rat, even if he's a rat other from standard, he would have no negative affect from his or her "disabilities." You were also wrong greatly in many facts you listed. One, a curly haired rat's whiskers would not burrow into his face. Two, Dumbo rats do not have any ear problems, their hearing is actually better than standard. Three, dwarf rats are often healthier and usually live longer than standard rats. Four, their curly whiskers do not impair their seeing at all. Five, hairless rats are never impaired from their lack of hair, they actually give off an inordinate amount of body heat, which is good, because in rats, you should be more concerned about heat stroke, not cold. Though I think I have greatly proven you wrong, if you would like to further argue this matter, I would be more than happy if you would email at: ratmanbv@gmail.com.

My husband and I have owned rats for many years. Our first rat, "Mathilda" was a lab rat and the most wonderful pet we ever had. Mathilda got us hooked on rats - I just wish they had a longer life span. I just wanted to write to find out why you have those 2 rats (showing size differences) in that horribly tiny cage. It is an extremely disturbing photo. I hope you put them in there just to compare sizes and only use it as a transportation carrier.

RatMan said...

To the anonymous with the concerns of the cage size in the photo. Those rats in the picture you see aren't my rats. They're from a different website in which I have no concern of. Right now i currently have 2 dwarf rats in very suitable sized cage. Thank you for coming to my site. I hope your experience with rats will continue to be a good one.

i've never had a pet rat but i can already tell that they are the best pet for me but i still have MILLIONS of questions! i doubt anyone can answer all of them
can you keep different breeds of rats in the same cage?
what fruits and vegetables can pet rats eat?
can they eat your food scrapes?
which houseplants are safe for rats and which are toxic?
which breeds are best for beginners?
what type of cage is best?
do any breeds require special care?
can you recommend any food brands?
can you take pet rats traveling with you? if so, for how long?
how many rats should i get?
what is dangerous for rats to chew on?
what can i let my rats chew on?
can you pick wild plants for your rats?
how well can rats handle traveling?
can rats get diseases?
how often do you take pet rats to the vet?
do rats get along with other pets?

i just can't know enough!!!

Pet rats don't have breeds this is retarded do your research before getting a pair of rats

RatMan said...

I'm pretty sure it is obvious to see that there are many different breeds of rats. I can't believe the ignorance in your statement. Thousand of rats breeders struggle to get specific breeds of rats everyday. You should try thinking next time.

I have a hairless rat. He is really not that hard to take care of. I give him bath with aloe wipes and rub him down with baby lotion about one a week. All he does that is a bit costly is eat a lot of food but he is a great. I def recommend hairless rats to everyone!!!!

moe said...

i breed rats as a hobby and i've got an albino rat that just had 11 healthy babies they're reeeeeally cute but two have crooked tails, is that ok?

Unknown said...

Nice web site! I just recently inherited a rat. The former owner, who by the way inherited it from a friend, said it was an Irish. Well, in my research I think he's a Russian Blue Irish. The 'Russian Blue' is his color and 'Irish' is his pattern or markings. I still haven't been able to confirm if this is a real combo or not. He is so sweet, loves to get his cheeks scratched!

RatMan said...

A rat's tail has two main purposes, one, to let out excess body heat, and two for blance etc. In captivity though there tail is only neccesary for letting out excess body heat. So chances are they will be fine unless there tails are so crooked it cannot properly have that function of the tail which I don't think is possible. That is all I can think would be a problem. So they should be fine, if you notice any further problem you might want to contact a vet, but in the mean time just keep them out of any extreme heat like any good owner.

Omg no. Just no please stop hanging on to this persons every word the are no jombo rat and this rat there are only three rat breeds, Norwegian Brown, Hooded rat (don't know the "scientific" name)and anotherone. I know I don't sound convincing but this person is retarded. Dumbo, and tailless, and hairless are all phyisical qualities not breeds. I have a rat farm and studied small animal technology for three year....I have never heard of these as breeds.

RatMan said...

Ok, yes, technically you are correct, but in the rat breeding community, they refer to these differences in fancy rats as breeds

gaaa! I am gettin' pet rats next weekend! I am sooo sooo happy that I found this site!!!! tanx a bunch! and oh, I was wonderin', do dwarf rats need any special diets or somthin'? because I really gotta know this stuff in order to be a swell new owner to my two awesome pets!
ps: are Cheezel and Pickle good rat names? -_- I am having a chrisis on pikin' out names... please help!

Anonymous said...

Well, dear anonymous, I am highly experienced with pet rats as I have two of them and many more are on the way. I have bred rats before and seeing those little faces is truly the best thing! I can assure you, dwarf rats do not need any special diets or treatment whatsoever seeing as they are almost exactly like standard rats, only smaller in size. And as for the names, it really depends on your personality and is upto you to decide what to call your own little critters. Cheezel and Pickle are wierd names but will hopefully match the cuteness of your pets.
Oh and one more thing, I think that dwarf rats are a great type of rat because they can live in smaller cages which is a good thing if you have a small apartment.

I'm ready for another rattie. This time instead of a pet store rat (they always got sick) I'd like to buy a dumbo and/or dwarf from a breeder but having a hard time finding one here in the SF bay area. Is it ok to mix a dumbo with a dwarf? I plan to get two males (lazy fuzzy butts) last one I had was a female and she never stopped moving. I want a cuddler. And is the dwarf dumbo more hyper or different in personality than say the regular dumbo?? I hear it's best to buy two, so they don't get lonely at night. Any places around here reputable you guys know of?? I'd be willing to drive far for the right rattie. Some ship... Is that bad for the rattie??

Its funny I saw someone mention a chinchilla. I had one. I paid R2500 for him (Gizmo) May he rest in peace because he certainly didn't die that way. My mother in laws dog tore him to shreds. Not by my negligence, The thing got into my part of the yard where he was sleeping. I didn't think he could or would. I.ve had rats as well. Now Im torn between getting another chinchilla or a rat. Why not both? could they be friends or am I overdosing on wishful thinking? Help!

I've been researching the African Poached rat. A large breed of rat that's become popular as a pet but I discovered it's illegal to keep them. They are really beautiful though but very moody and unpredictable as they are not domesticated. I am trying to locate a breeder in my area but finding it impossible. Wish me luck. L

since dumbo, rex, hairless, fancy, all come from the same basic lab rat, and are just mutations you can breed them together. for example, if you breed two rex rats, (dominant gene) you will get hairless, some rex, and some where the patches of hair move arround on the rat(patchwork) you can breed dumbo rats to regular rats, hairless or rex. in fact, since dumbo rats have a lot of problems, it is good to occasionally add in a 'normal' rat. the dumbo rats can have concave heads, usually have smaller brains, a flater head, and the ears can be big and dumbo like, curled, pointed, some with haive one ear up, one ear down. I have found my dumbo rat to be the sweetest of all 7 of my rats. the hairless are great, but you have to help bathe them just like the sphynx cats as they dont have hair to wick away grease and other things off of their skin so they can clean themselves right. its not a big deal, and usually they love baths and to swim in some shallow watter. totally white rats, are not all albino, they can be white, or cream or buff but look white, its all in the eyes, are they actualy red, or are they pink. a ttue albino will have RED eyes, not pink, and the tail will have no yellow or other color but ust pink. they are more prone to cancer as well as a gut issue. most rats you buy as albino are not in fact albino. rats make awesome pets that are very loving and cuddly. you just have to work with them so they know what you want. as long as you dont just have one rat its ok. they dont like to be alone, and it infact can stress them out to the point they could die. odd huh. they like a little rat pack. plus, watching rats play can be fun. make sure they have lots of toys and things that they can play with and keep their minds busy as they are very smart and do get bord. its okay to introduce rats to ones you have. but keep in mind that they are a pack critter. they like to keep to their own family. a good example is my two females that i first got i got from one breeder, and the male was from a different one. it took about three or four days for them to work things out between the two family groups. just make sure they accept eachother. introducing two males, unless while babies can be tricky as they do fight. and they box too. in captivity they can live up to three years, while in the wild they live less than a year. which means at 18 monts or so you can plan on having menopausal rats......so enjoy your rats and there are a lot of places to get info. you can also look up ratteries and ask the breeders questions.

I don't know a single member of the fancy rat community that would ever refer to different rat variations or colorations as "breeds". That just sounds incredibly ignorant you're only spreading misinformation (so are you, Mr. "I have a rat farm and studied small animal technology for three year[s]"... clearly you need to study a little harder).

I know everyone that I've told them that I have rats believe I'm crazy! I own currently 4 fancy rats (all were supposed to be snake food, I bought them to save there lives when they were only 5 weeks old). I'm telling you it's great to get rats when they are not even 2 months old. Oh the names of my rats are Bella, Stella, Skyline and Sven which are now 3 1/2 months old. Although I recomend that people should not buy rats from a pet shop. My very first rat was only 5 months old and she died within 2 weeks of us owning her (names Rat Fink)from a genital infection. And our newest rat Sven has stiff rear legs where she can't walk right and has a respitory problem at only 3 months old. But I'm always going to love them. I'm the crazy animals lady of our town since I own 3 cats, 3 dogs, 3 horses and 4 rats! I beleieve they are the best pet that anyone can have!:)Our rats even play with our 1 dog a corgi/terrier mix (don't worry the dog just lays there and lets the rats climb all over her it so cute to see. It's my 1st year of owning rats and I love it!

my advice would be to keep trying, i rescued a male dumbo eared rat that was the same way, little guy even gave me a good nip or two , but having raised over 70 rats in my life time i knew it was just a matter of time, try to hand feed the little one. that always worked for me. just keep water in the cage no food , soon she will warm up to you. My dumbo now "rocky" is my constent shadow and is as loving a can be.

i currently have two new rats (sandy and bianca)that are now almost three months old. one is a dumbo blue and the other a standard white. this is my second pair as i got into rats because i rescues a standard white from a snake 2-1/2 years and ago her name was leuka i soon learned that rats are social creatures and like to have a cagemate so i purchase a little black standard from petco soon after. her name was betty. leuka was riddled with all kinds of ailments, bumble foot, tumors, respitory issues and then i got a bad batch of bedding which caused both to get mites. so ia have had an education on rat care for sure. be prepared if yu are to get them as pets they too need vet care sometimes and can get costly. i lost both betty and leuka in october at the age of 2. they died a week apart from each other. i truly believe even though i had gotten the new babies a day after leuka passed that betty died of a broken heart as she and lueka had been cage mates their whole lives. i absolutely love these little creatures and never thought they could bring so much joy to our family. i would recommened to anyone to own a rat they are sweet loving and very intellegent pets i only wish they had a longer life span. thanks for having this log. ps both of my little girls are helping me type this lol

I spent a year asking for my rats, doing thirty page wed documents (two and a half of them) and over twenty pages on my slide show representation, pictures, begging in controlled, and anything I could think of. Both my parents thought thebidea was repulsive, but after my mom got cancer, for Christmas she decided to get me two girls :) so I picked out two girls and they are the love of my life. It took two weeks to bond, and after the two weeks they were ready to be held because they would come right out on my lap and climb only shoulder and beg for attention :") they are such sweet babies and I couldn't amagine life without them. And by the way, they are fancy rats :"):");")

I have a question about bedding, are the pellets that look like rabbit food better to use to line the cage and absorb pee and poop or should you fluffy crinkles or soft, fluffy bedding to cover bottom of cage?

All pet rats are called "fancy rats".. there is no "breed" difference-just various colors/patterns/coats/ears. And I know this because I am friends with multiple people who own ratteries.. I have 6 rats right now. 3 are from the same breeder and are: Black Berkshire rex top ear, Black Irish double rex(patchwork) dumbo ear, Blue/white veriberk double rex top ear, American blue self dumbo ear with smooth coat, and 2 brothers who are fawn with garnet eyes dumbo ears and smooth coat. All fancy rats. You can breed any rats to eachother. The only major issue is breeding what is called "high white" lines.. Meaning rats with blazes, masked, double odd eyed etc. They are prone to Mega colon and means the death of the babies due to impaction of the colon. Manx are also high risk to breed. I suggest anyone looking for more info on rats to look into a Rattery in your area. I see a lot of misinformation on this blog.

No such thing as "half rex". she is just a rex with some fawn coloring or a variation of fawn

Dwarf rats are more expensive to purchase and hyper. Dumbo and top ear are both fancy rats and in my experience, both have varied personalities depending on breeding..

I have four standard rats. They are the loves of my life <3

I have three adult dumbo rats, plus a female and male dumbo hairless rats. The female hairless recently gave birth to seven babies, but we now only have six. I can't tell what they are yet, but I can't wait!

I am a rat & mouse fanatic!personaly I think the standard rats the original and best! Man should not interfere with nature makeing these highly bred rats! It's wrong!

I have 4pet rats all standard hooded rats and are very friendly but our oldest is the dominant one and won't put up with any baby rats she will attack the baby so when we get a new young rat we have to keep it away till it is at least the size of a three month old when we got her she was a only rat and seemed to be happy that way she also was kept by her self at the pet shop how can we deal with this and all so when introducing her to new people we can't do this in public or with a group of people sh seems to get scared when we introduce new people in a group or public and not in our home and has been known to bite then when really she is a sweet loving rat

Did you know about fancy rats?

Unknown said...

From all the other comments I`m guessing the best choice a dumbo rat. Oh,and by the way Ericka, you can look on petfinder and you might find a dumbo rat near your area.

I had a Chocolate hooded rat when I was a kid. He was the best Rat I ever owned, everyone one since he passed was not worth mentioning (sorry rat lovers) But he lived to the ripe old age of 5 1/2 yrs old. He was VERY special. I am now back to mice (I had mice long bofore I ever had a rat) but I do still love rats, just can't do 3 species with my medical problems (I have 2 medical service dogs - 1 is retied and I REFUSE to let anyone put him down when he is only 8 yrs old!!!- the other is only 3 yrs old and was not trained as I was told he would be, so my 8 yr old is helping to train him for everything that I need him to do) then I have my mice, my wonderful Hobby that I love so much. so adding another species would be a bit too much for me, although the thought of owning a male dwarf dumbo rat is appealing to me. But havng no money to buy one, and not knowing a good breeder to get one from,, (I refuse to help the PET MILL Industry by buying pets from pet stores!!!!!) if a breeder close to me is willing to give me a young dwarf dumbo rat, I would definitely make room for it in my home, most likely right next to my bed where I could spend more time with him (I prefer Male pets, I know, they stink, but they are so sweet despie their unplesant odor)

Everything you had written is interesting and good to learn but I never found the Hairless Fancy Rats fancy. They are something different for me, something that I won't be preferring while having my pet. I had been taking help from the Pet Grooming Tips to know about the pets in detail.

If you don't think rats are necessarily the pet you are looking for, but want a pet similar to a rat, I would look into a chinchilla. This link is great for the history of chinchillas, and is really interesting.
